What is this website?
The dream is for Sea Kayaking Atlas to become a curated directory of sea kayaking resources, designed for paddlers who are looking to deepen their skills, connect with instructors, and discover others on a similar journey. It aims to make the broader sea kayaking community more visible and accessible.
Dennis Personal Project
Hi, I'm Dennis, and I'm based in Rochester, NY. I've been casually into kayaking for at least 20 years, but things began to shift in 2019. During a trip to Scotland with my wife, we booked a two-day overnight kayak camping trip off the coast of Oban. That experience sparked a deeper interest in learning and building my sea kayaking skills.
This website is a bit of an experiment. It brings together a few of my passions. Several lifetimes ago, I was a software engineer and enjoyed building things. These days, I work in management, but I still feel the itch to write some code. With kayaking being my other passion, and recently I spent several weeks searching for instructors and symposiums within driving distance of where I live on the East Coast of the U.S.
The search wasn't easy. Many websites don't even make it clear what state an instructor is located in. But after a lot of digging, I now have a notebook full of names, websites, offerings, and notes.
This site is simply a way to share what I've already found with friends—and maybe with you. If others find it useful, maybe it'll grow into something more.
For now, there’s no monetization, no advertising, and no affiliate links—just a personal project created to help fellow paddlers find what I had to dig up myself. If it grows in the future, I may need to think about covering hosting and maintenance costs, but that’s a future problem. The goal today is simply to share and support the community.
